Why waterproofing determines shower longevity
Grout and even properly sealed tile are not the water barrier in a well-built shower; the membrane behind them is. Water moves through grout joints and porous tile over time regardless of sealant, so the assembly is designed to manage that water behind the finished surface, not to prevent it from ever reaching the substrate. When a shower fails, it is almost always a failure of the membrane or a transition detail, not the tile itself.

- Inside and outside corners, where the membrane must be reinforced or specifically detailed.
- The curb or threshold, which needs to be fully wrapped, not just topped.
- Niche construction, which is a frequent leak point if not treated as part of the membrane.
- The drain connection, which must match the waterproofing system's specified drain type.
- Any penetration for a valve, spout or shower arm.
Slope and drainage
A shower floor needs slope toward the drain, built either in a mortar bed or a pre-sloped pan, with the waterproofing membrane placed at the correct layer for the system chosen. Curbless and linear-drain showers require more attention to slope planning since there is less margin for error at the entry.

The right system for a given shower depends on the existing substrate, whether the floor structure allows for a curbless entry, the shape of the shower, and the tile being installed.
